What is Back Rolling?
When using a paint spray machine, the standard method most contractors use is to spray and back roll the primer/paint. The contractor will use the spray machine to spray the primer/paint onto the house and there will be an additional employee right behind the sprayer back rolling the primer/paint into the surface of the area.
Why is Back Rolling Important?
The importance of this method is that it will promote a stronger bond between the coat of primer/paint and the area by working the material into the surface rather than leaving it on top of the surface to dry. This will result in better paint job, it won’t fade as fast, and it will be less likely to peel off. Back rolling also helps apply the paint more evenly rather than only spraying it on.
When Should You Back Roll?
We believe back rolling is always necessary. Back rolling is important when applying primer to interior drywall to help smooth raised fibers. As well as exterior new stucco to help work the paint into all the hairline cracks and little holes for a more solid finish. We even believe in back rolling the exterior/interior of a repaint
Conclusion
Back rolling is an important part of the paint spray machine process. Don’t cut corners, back rolling or not could either make or break your paint job. A spray job without back rolling could result in a less efficient coat, causing the paint to fade quicker and peel faster.
